The Dark Web Is (Probably) About To Get A Lot Darker
Share on Social Media

The dark web is a far-reaching term used to describe areas of the internet that are any number of degrees from the standard, non-encrypted internet browsing most of us use every day. ” routing,” a form of something called tor (The Onion Routing network — or TOR for short) that mask your ISP connection and identity. But in reality this is just one small part of the dark web. Any number of onion sites are used to help protect your privacy and security online, as well as libraries and other information databases.

What is the Dark Web?

The Dark Web is a term used to describe the collection of websites which cannot be found using search engines such as Google and Bing. The websites on the Dark Web can only be accessed by means of special software, called Tor.

Description: Tor was originally developed in the 1990s by the US Naval Research Laboratory as means of protecting government communications. Since then, it has evolved into an application that helps people around the world exercise free speech, evade censorship and protect their privacy.

Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what.

Despite this, it’s still possible to find out what sites are on the Tor Network using a number of methods. Many users will use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) in order to hide their IP address and location, but this doesn’t prevent someone from finding out what sites are available at their destination. For example, if you connect to a VPN server in France but then try and access Facebook or Twitter via Tor, your identity will still be revealed – because those services aren’t hosted on that VPN server.

The FBI Makes A Deadly Mistake

The FBI has seized the servers of the largest online drug marketplace, a site called Silk Road. This is an unprecedented move by the FBI and the first time that it’s attempting to cut off drug dealers from their customers. And, from a technical standpoint, it’s a pretty impressive takedown.

The first big mistake here is that they seized the server in Seatlle. They should have taken them offline remotely and then physically seized them so they can’t be turned back on. The fact that this site is still up right now shows how amateurish this operation really is.

The second mistake here was seizing all of the bitcoin in escrow. This means that anyone with money on Silk Road also lost their investment! The market itself has been compromised, which makes me wonder if any of these digital drugs are actually legit or just full of fake stuff like bath salts and PCP. That’s going to hurt their reputation so much and make people less likely to use them in the future.

This will definitely just push this underground market further underground and into even darker places like I2P and Tor hidden services. This will make it impossible for law enforcement to find them with techniques like wiretapping

The Dark Web’s Own Lawyers

The Dark Web is like the Wild West of the Internet. It’s probably best known for serving as a marketplace for drugs, weapons and other illegal goods, but it also has a lot of uses that are more benign.

The Dark Web isn’t really a place. It’s just a name for parts of the web that aren’t indexed by search engines like Google. You need special software to access it, and it’s often referred to as the “deep web.” Some websites on the deep web have been around for a long time, but its profile skyrocketed in 2013 with the rise of Silk Road — an online black market where people could buy illegal drugs by using digital currency Bitcoin.

Which brings me to FreeRoss.org — a website set up by Ross Ulbricht’s family and friends to raise awareness about his case. The site was on the Dark Web as recently as this week, but then its hosting company announced that

The Government Might Be Able To Trace Bitcoin After All

The problem is that Bitcoin users don’t generate their own addresses: They rely on third-party services. An MIT paper from last year revealed that 99 percent of all Bitcoin users get their addresses from one of three websites: Blockchain.info, Coinbase or Circle. You can think of these services as your online bank: They keep track of your money for you, and they provide you with an address when you want to receive payments.

If you’re using Bitcoin for illicit purposes, it’s incredibly easy to get caught by going through one of these services. Here’s how it works:

To do that, you need Bitcoin — so you go through Coinbase to generate an address. Coinbase has information about how much money is flowing into each account.

Countries Begin To Regulate Dark Web Marketplaces

Now, countries including Ireland, France and Australia are talking about how to regulate these dark marketplaces. Ireland’s Department of Justice is working on legislation that could ban the sale of illegal items from sites hosted within its borders. In Australia, a parliamentary inquiry into the legal status of virtual currencies (of which Bitcoin is one) has called for regulation of online black markets.

Although the Dark Web has not yet experienced the “death of the internet”, that may soon be upon us. Recently created counter-measures are slowly killing Tor under its own weight. If you are intent on accessing the Dark Web, you need to start thinking about an exit strategy now.
